English Defence League turns up in Brighton and ruins everyone’s Easter Sunday

Reports coming in at the moment suggest that the police have kettled the anti-fascist demonstrators whilst the fat skinheads are allowed to drink beer in pubs. What is going on? People on the beach are complaining about the helicopter noise and generally being very pissed off.

Brighton has a proud tradition of fighting fascists and racists. That’s what these scumbags are. Oswald Mosley wanted to make Brighton the headquarters of his movement in the South of England. His organisation planned a march through Brighton but were beaten back by thousands of people who threw stones at them. The HQ plans were abandoned. Perhaps the police fear that there will be a repeat of this? In the 1980s some old Labour people told me that Mosely and a few of his supporters had made it as far as the Corn Exchange, where he was due to address his supporters, but that the crowd had rushed into the building, pushed them out into Pavilion Gardens at the back and “broken them” (hospitalised).

1st ride of the year

Been off the bicycle this year as a result of moving house. The chain became immovable with rust after it had been left in a friend’s garage, which was open to the elements. I put it off until the other day, when my pal Alan agreed to go cycling with me. This was an opportunity not to be missed. I’ve known Alan for ten years.

I’ve been constantly suggesting that he come cycling with me but he has always declined. On Tuesday he pointed out that he’s only had a bicycle since January. Here’s my route:

Luckily we spied the people with the best job in the world. All they have to do is drive along the seafront and empty the bins. They didn’t even bother emptying the bin behind our bench. I hope we, the good folk of Brighton & Hove,  pay them properly for this stressful task. Every day they must be waiting to see whether some wag has superglued the locks on the gate by the cafe, meaning that they would have to reverse all the way back along the under cliff path.
