Today I used my kitchen as a tool instead of an adversary

Something incredible happened today. I decided to tackle a new meal. I treated my kitchen as an ally for the first time in my life. My new friend responded well to the unexpected trust placed in it. The only rebellious moment saw the cooker ping off its spark starter nob, so that now there is only metal to press. No matter! What could possibly spoil my mood, now that I am able to cook stuffed courgettes?!

Some random blitz game

I used to go to Brighton & Hove Chess Club on a Saturday afternoon, to toil away over a board with other lost souls. Together we sheltered from the sunshine in summer but not from the rain in winter – the club’s venue had a leaky roof. The leaky roof didn’t stop me from winning the Eric Cohen Cup but the club president did. Not by beating me at chess, I beat her. Instead she airbrushed me out of this year’s tournament altogether. Officially I never played it!

The mysterious of Brighton Marina

I’m wondering about the man who contemplates the water, the dark, inky black water, late at night. He stares and stares, harrumphs, kicks his heels and retires into one of the worst pubs in Brighton, the Master Mariner. Later on he comes out again, leans on the rail on the edge of the water and thoughtfully eyes the water some more, before retiring back inside. A third time he emerges, waits, watches and when he’s sure no-one is paying attention, lets slip a plastic bag, which plops into the shallow depths beside the quayside.

Prep

I’m preparing myself for next week’s new look blog, thus not much to report. From next week, there’ll be a constant slick presentation of topics to suit the day. If I don’t have material for the day in question, maybe I won’t post at all.

First carrots show themselves

Am I supposed to cover the carrots when they start to poke out of the earth, like this:

late starters

Debbie Harry doesn’t live here anymore

Is it any wonder? With so many other so called celebs, congregating here and voting Green, Brighton is way too cool to be manageable for the  edge touring artist.

Something for the weekend, sir?

I’ve decided to post certain topics on certain days of the week to give my readers some certainty in dealing with my eclectic content. These are the topics I blog about: life, tech, politics, cooking, cycling, chess and random stuff. Skipping over the fact that that last subject is clearly just a Sunday mopping up exercise, there is obviously one topic for each day of the week. The question becomes, which topic is best for which day of the week?

I wondered whether I should conduct an opinion poll of my readers to make the choice, surrendering to the democratic vote. Then I thought, fuck it, this is clearly a case where I know best This is a choice which only requires a minute’s thought. So here’s my choice and reasoning:

Monday Life
Tuesday Tech
Wednesday Politics in the Cave
Thursday Cooking in the Cave
Friday Old School Cycling
Saturday Chess in the Cave
Sunday Random

Therefore, from next Monday you can choose which days of the week you might want to read my blog!

Live flights graphic (sort of)

I’m completely opposed to commercial flying but this infographic caught my eye. I thought that it had an aesthetic beauty and was interesting enough to link to here: it’s a graphic of live flights.

Mothers and Sons

Here’s a video made by my cousin Wil, for the occasion of my Auntie’s 60th Birthday. I wish I was this creative but perhaps my Mum does not?! I am struggling to get over the shock of realising that it is apparently okay in Australian culture to send a video of your adult self naked to your own mum!!
