The Day A Death Warrant Was Served On The NHS – Now It’s Personal!

The thieving Tory bastards have made this personal attack on us all. We are the 99%. They are the 1%. The Liberal Democrats know they are facing, as a good friend of mine described it, “political armageddon”. There’s now no distinction between these two forces of darkness. They have cynically manipulated the democratic process with bare-faced pre-election lies about protecting the National Health Service. Now they’ve signed its death warrant.

This treason will never be forgotten. This heinous crime against the most precious achievement of our civil society is far, far worse than a mere breach of the social contact between state and people. It is a direct attack by the rich against the poor, an ambush against our community spirit and a low point in British political history.

From here on in the ordinary rules of political combat have changed. The MPs who voted for the bill must be challenged every waking moment of their day. Everywhere they go, wherever they live, whatever they do. Politics is no longer polite or respectful, they have made that true. The gloves are coming off.

If you feel even half as angry about this as I do, this is the time to work out what you can do to assist the campaign of mass civil disobedience now beginning. If you can’t be involved personally as much as those of us who intend to occupy the London Stock Exchange on Saturday 15th October (see info below), please consider what else you can do. Remember, this revolution is not being televised.

Be creative, be peaceful, be persistent. Jam their phone lines, decline to cooperate wherever possible, donate cash and goods to the occupation camps.

I had been really looking forward to celebrating David Ingledew’s 60th birthday on Saturday and am gutted to miss it. My wife will go. She does plenty for the NHS already – she’s one of their doctors. One of our doctors! I’ll be heading to London with a sleeping bag, a tent, some solar power, some video cameras and an internet connection. I’ll be staying until necessary and if that means choking up the prison system, so be it. As Nye Bevan famously said, the NHS will only survive for as long as people are prepared to fight for it.

If you can’t be spared for this level of involvement, please do whatever you can to help those who can. There’s also plenty you can do on the home front. Follow the activists online to find out where this movement is going and what you can do to help. Doing something every day, even if it is just a telephone call in protest.

If you want to join us in London on Saturday, here’s how:

Occupy the London Stock Exchange
15th October
12pm
St Paul’s Cathedral

The words ‘corporate greed’ ring through the speeches and banners of protests across the globe. After huge bail-outs and in the face of unemployment, privatisation and austerity we still see profits for the rich on the increase. But we are the 99%, and on October 15th our voice unites across gender and race, across borders and continents as we call for equality and justice for all.

In London we will occupy the stock exchange. Reclaiming space in the face of the financial system and using it to voice ideas for how we can work towards a better future. A future free from austerity, growing inequality, unemployment, tax injustice and a political elite who ignores its citizens, and work towards concrete demands to be met.

Assemble in front of St Pauls Cathedral at Midday – please try to be on time and not early or late. When you are there be ready and attentive. Make sure to follow @OccupyLSX on twitter for updates on the day.

Try to come with a friend or group of friends. If you are thinking of staying for a while bring plenty of food and water, wrap up warm and you may want to bring tents and a sleeping bag.

Bring your energy and excitement, and be ready to create a better world!

Sleepless night for corrupt UK police

I write this before hearing today’s news. It is all becoming too hilarious to cope with. Last time the thieving Tory bastards were in power, we were on the back foot. All the state’s forces conspired against us. This time around, they aren’t just on the back foot, they’ve been knocked off their feet.

David Cameron’s been stopped from suckling at Rupert Murdoch’s tits, the worst of the gutter press has been closed down and a radical international organisation of hacktivists, who have probably never met each other, towers above every intelligence agency on the globe. They appear invincible. Groups like them make politics interesting again. Keeping secrets appears impossible with them around. More than that, they are witty and amusing. Quite a change from the Old Left!

This morning they have promised to attack the computer systems of the UK police and judiciary to thank them for their connivance with the fraud, privacy invasion and criminality of Murdoch’s crew. This is the expected news which I can’t face just yet. I need a break from this ride. I want to get off the rollercoaster. There’s been noises that they have probed Murdoch’s servers, which would be handy in the light of Murdoch’s crew apparently having attempted to delete incriminating data.

Yesterday they turned their attention to Booz Allen Hamilton, whose core business is apparently contractual work completed on behalf of the US federal government, foremost on defense and homeland security matters, and limited engagements of foreign governments specific to U.S. military assistance programs. Anonymous use a naval vessel metaphor to describe Booz’s security: they say they only had a puny wooden barge. They claim to have infiltrated Booz’s server and grabbed roughly 90,000 military emails and password hashes. They say they also got hold of Booz’s svn (a software versioning and a revision control system founded and sponsored in 2000 by CollabNet Inc. Developers use Subversion to maintain current and historical versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation.) and grabbed 4GB of source code, which they also wiped off Booz’s system. They say that Booz’s key staff are:

  • John Michael “Mike” McConnell, Executive Vice President of Booz Allen and former Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and former Director of National Intelligence.
  • James R. Clapper, Jr., current Director of National Intelligence, former Director of Defense Intelligence.
  • Robert James Woolsey Jr, former Director of National Intelligence and head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
  • Melissa Hathaway, Current Acting Senior Director for Cyberspace for the National Security and Homeland Security Councils.

Anonymous accuse Booz of being involved in illegal surveillance, questionable auditing practices and having a revolving door conflict with the US government. You can read more details and find links here.

The bit I really like is that they present an invoice to Booz for $310! This is how they break down this ‘bill’:

4 hours of man power: $40.00
Network auditing: $35.00
Web-app auditing: $35.00
Network infiltration*: $0.00
Password and SQL dumping**: $200.00
Decryption of data***: $0.00
Media and press****: $0.00

Total bill: $310.00

*Price is based on the amount of effort required.
**Price is based on the amount of badly secured data to be dumped, which in this case was a substantial figure.
***No security in place, no effort for intrusion needed.

Anonymous Action

I’m not keen on anonymity, as I’ve said before, with reference to other bloggers. Why not stand up and be counted? That said, some things have to be done anonymously for fear of retribution, like throwing bricks through windows belonging to the thieving Tory bastards. That’s not my style though. It’s better to act in a positive constructive way most of the time and if you are going to throw bricks through windows, throw them through your own windows.

What if it wasn’t a brick but a message? I’m a big fan of graffiti, even the tagging that others find so ghastly. They see a tag and look for a vandal. I see a tag and feel confident that our public spaces are not properly controlled by our corporation economy. I see people reclaiming public spaces and making them beautiful again, even if the message is sometimes ugly. It might sound like I’m in favour of writing messages on the windows and walls of the homes of thieving Tory bastards but I’m not.

Nor, in general, am I in favour of cracking passwords to other people’s websites and changing the content their without permission or even just reading their secret files. This is even easier than throwing bricks through other people’s windows because:

  • it can be done from the comfort (or otherwise, depending on your circumstances) of your own home
  • it is very low cost
  • it might seem a little bit creative
  • it’s more likely to get the message across than a seemingly random act of violence
  • it could be funny
  • it is ridiculously easy

I believe in freedom of expression, even if that means that people have the right to express hateful views. There are limits though. It’s good that we’ve got laws to stop people inciting hatred. These laws don’t seem to have as much force in the USA, where organisations such as Westboro Baptist Church is able to promote all sorts of homophobia and other forms of hatred via its websites. In lieu of effective legal protection for minorities, a collective of hacktivists called Anonymous stepped in, allegedly. At least that’s what the church says. Anonymous said it wasn’t them but were sufficiently offended by the spokeswoman for the church (when told that they would go to Hell), that they took down the church’s website during the interview. Anonymous’s announcement comes around about 8:30. My favourite bit is when the man from Anonymous admits to having committed 9,000 sins.
